A Winning Combination for Heart Disease: Doctor, Diet, Exercise, and Stress Reduction

Think about it. If bad eating habits and lack of exercise led you down the path to heart disease, then maybe you can eat and exercise your way back to health.

And when you put together doctor, diet, and exercise in the right way, you can undo much of the damage you've done.

This is no fairy tale. It's real. In fact it's often more realistic for treating heart disease risk factors than many of the treatments that first come to mind. Treatments you may already be using yourself--like medications.

Many leading health organizations suggest that lifestyle changes are not only a good idea, but recommended as the number one form of treatment to help prevent heart disease and manage or reverse early warning signs.

Research on Lifestyle Medicine has Shown Promising Results

Here's some evidence behind taking this approach:

The American Journal of Cardiologypublished a study of 2390 men and women dealing with problems like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and/or type 2 diabetes. After 12 weeks of coaching on lifestyle changes, the participants were able to achieve goals for reduced blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and blood sugar levels.

A trial published in the Journal of the American Medical Association had two groups of people follow two different diets. One group simply followed a "prudent diet" with a good ratio of carbs, proteins, and fats at less than 30%. The second group ate a Mediterranean diet filled with lots of heart healthy foods like whole grains, fruits, veggies, nuts, and olive oil.

After two years, both groups had their blood tested for C-reactive protein and interleukin-6, two indicators of inflammation and predictors of heart attack risk. The group following the Mediterranean-style diet had significantly lower measures of both these indicators in their blood than the group who simply followed a ratio-balanced diet.

These are just two the many studies that document how thousands of people have changed their health by changing their lifestyle habits. The videos on this website tell the same kind of stories: how people made lifestyle changes, reversed risk, and took control of their bodies and their future.

Making changes isn't always easy. How many diet books have you read? Or exercise videos have you watched and then let gather dust? It takes some effort to undo old habits, develop new tastes, and find new ways of looking at things. Not to mention monitoring your progress and making adjustments as you go along so you can reach your goals faster.

Create Your Own Success Story with Professional Guidance

A good professional partner makes all the difference. Look for a doctor who is trained in helping patients make long-lasting lifestyle changes. One who will coach you along the way and keep you focused on getting there may be the key element that makes these changes you want become a reality.
